Blood, Sweat, and Tears
Written By Ikenna Uwawuike
During my freshman year in high school
When I played football,
It took blood, sweat, & tears.
Me & my teammates
Would go to war
Every time we stepped on the field.
We would never back down during a big war.
When the games started,
My blood pressure went up
& all I saw was red
Whenever I stepped on that damn field.
Me & my teammates
Were always hungry to get the victory,
& we were not afraid of whoever came in our way.
Whenever I saw a defender
That came in my way,
I would put him on a T-shirt
& make him eat his own dust.
The days my teammates and I
Had some redeeming moments
Were the day when
We fought for victory.
I remember
When I ran this perfect route
& used my blazing speed
To rush to the endzone.
My QB threw me a dimer,
& I ended up securing my feet
To stay inbound for the first down.
When I ran the football,
It felt like
I was carrying weights
Everywhere in my body from neck to feet.
The wind was blowing
Through & breezing on my face
Whenever I ran 100%.
The wind felt like a tornado
That was about to push
& pick me up from the ground.
The times
My teammates and I had our stressful moments
Were the days
We came up short
& dealt with pain and agony.
I remembered
When my QB threw a short pass
To me & I caught the ball & turned around.
The defender
Used his explosiveness & his blazing speed
To bulldoze his way to get the tackle.
I started feeling dizzy
& couldn’t stay stable on my feet
& my vision was blurry.
It felt like
I was in a whole new universe
Invaded by astronauts & aliens.
